Some help on surviving Ramadhan as a mommy :)

Ahh, its Ramadhan again.
How is yours going so far? I hope it’s great!

The only thing that bugs me when it comes to fasting is gas. Like seriously, I am a gassy person. I get bloated easily and sometimes it gives me headache.

Anyway, not to complaint or anything….

Let’s talk about Ramadhan and being a mom, shall we?

OK, now ever since I became a mom, obviously my routines changed. Like 360 degree change.
So when it comes to Ramadhan, the routines change too. When I was young and single, I don’t worry much about what to have for suhoor, where to eat for iftar, going to the masjid to for taraweeh prayers and even dealing with the sight of food during the day.

But when I become a mom, I realized that things have changed a bit.

For starters, when you have a child not yet of age to fast, for sure you have to deal with cooking even during the day (to feed her). When you are fasting, even the smell of a simple vegetable porridge tickles the tastebuds! Haha...

And then, you have to think of what food there is for suhoor, mostly for the husband. I thank God that mine is not very fussy when it comes to suhoor food, I just need to make sure that there are eggs and bread and he is cool with that.

Next comes iftaar – what to eat or cook for iftaar. I have to make sure that some decent food is served, at least rice and one kind of dish. Not to mention the stock of dates, and some desserts maybe.

And then comes the biggest part – going to the masjid for taraweeh prayers.

Now, the thing about Ramadhan is that it lifts everyone’s spirit beautifully. Living in a Muslim country, I am blessed that the spirit of Ramadhan can be felt everywhere. What’s more with social medias nowadays, people are also able to share their excitement and their activities about Ramadhan; the point is, you just don’t want to be left out.

Having a child means that I could not just simply go to the masjid for taraweekh prayers anymore.

So, my option is only to pray on my own, in the sanctuary of my own home.
I have come across many moms, voicing out their frustrations that they are no longer entitled to enjoy the pahala of praying taraweeh at the masjid anymore. After all, it has always been understood that the reward is so massive when you get to do so.

Yet we forget that as a mother, our act of staying behind and taking care of the kids is already an ibadah to Allah, as long we do it honestly and because it is our duty as a mother to take care of the children who are indeed the amanah from Him. And its Ramadhan, everything is doubled!

So cheer up, for Allah is Fair, and if everything is done for Him, rewards are everywhere!

Even though we have to stay behind at home, we can always pray and devote ourselves once the kids are tucked into bed. The best thing is we can do it all from the comfort of our home and we have all the time we need.

So if you are feeling down about having to be a Ramadhan Stay-at-home mom, maybe this will help to perk you up:
"...Asmā' bint'l-Sakan al-Anṣāriyyah, on behalf of the women in Madīnah, came to the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) while he was surrounded by his companions and asked boldly:  “O Messenger of Allāh! The men have taken all your time…” and she complained that men are entitled to the reward of the congregational prayers, Fridays, fighting with him and other works of good deeds while women were confined to their houses and taking care of their children. She asked if women share men in the reward for what they are doing. The Messenger of Allāh ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) replied, “Go back to the women who sent you and let them know that treating their husbands kindly and taking care of them is equivalent to that all you mentioned.” Reported by al-Bazzar and al-Ṭabarāni..."

Anyway, if you have older kids and you wish to train them to the masjid for taraweeh, these are some useful tips:

So there, Ramadhan seems to be even better when we are a mom isn’t it? Bella is still too young for me to teach details about Ramadhan now, but when the time comes I hope I will be able to do my best to teach her all about this special month.

How about you? Are you a Ramadhan SAHM like me, or otherwise? Any tips on getting the children to enjoy Ramadhan as well?

You can always do terawih at home. As long as you know the responsibility as mom and as a servant to Him has been fulfilled. Allah Maha Adil :)
